A football trip to Milan

Combine your football trip to one of the top clubs AC Milan or FC Internazionale Milano with a city trip and visit the beautiful city of Milan. Milan is visited very often and is known for its fashion. Fashion isn't the only thing the city is crazy about: the city goes wild when a match between Milan's two football clubs takes place. This match is always exhilirating and every citizen in Milan is looking forward to the derby. The two clubs share the San Siro stadium, despite of the intense rivalry between them.

What else does Milan have to offer?

Besides visiting the San Siro stadium - which is known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza amongst Inter Milan supporters - for a football match, there are plenty of other things to do in Milan. The city can be sighted in a couple of days, giving you enough time to relax in the stunning country. San Siro is the biggest football stadium in Italy and has a capacity of 80,018. For this reason alone, it’s highly recommended to do a tour of the shared stadium. Number 1 Football Travel has made an overview of what else you can do and see in Milan, which you can find below. Read about the most beautiful sights in Milan and what else you can do during your trip. We wish you a great football trip to Milan!

The Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano is absolutely the most famous sight of the fashion city of Milan. The cathedral is located in the middle of Milan and is therefore hard to miss. After the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the cathedral of Sevilla is the Duomo di Milano the biggest cathedral of Europe. As it should be, because the constructions of this cathedral started in the fourteenth century and finished in 1965. You'll even see marble stones which still have to turn into statues someday. Fortunately, 3159 statues can still be admired, so you should absolutely visit the stunning Duomo di Milano in the heart of the city.

The Monastery Santa Maria delle Grazie (The Last Supper)

The Monastery Santa Maria delle Grazie is on the World Heritage List of UNESCO and was built in the fifteenth century. It’s a beautiful place surrounded by seven chapels and a graveyard, but most people visit the monastery for Leonardo Da Vinci’s wall painting: ‘The Last Supper’. This is one of his most famous and biggest artworks. It’s highly recommended to buy your ticket beforehand, because this is basically impossible at the entrance.

Opening times: from Tuesday until Sunday: 8:15 A.M until 7 P.M.

Piazza Affari and L.O.V.E.

On the Piazza Affari you can find a gigantic and… bold statue. A big middle finger is in the middle of the square to demonstrate that the people were against capitalism during the economic crisis in Italy in 2010. The statue symbolises freedom, hatred, revenge, and eternity.

The Navigli district

A canal flows through the middle of the Navigli district and is surrounded by numerous restaurants and bars. It’ll feel like you’re walking in Venice when you’re walking the streets of Navigli. The side streets are filled with boutiques and squares. It's also possible to book a canal cruise so you can look at the district from the water. This is the ideal place to find some rest by wandering through the narrow streets and you can even enjoy Italian appetites for free during late afternoons and evenings. The ‘aperitivos’, as it’s called, are displayed as a buffet and you’re free to take as many as you’d like. Aperitivo cannot only be found in Navigli, but also in districts like Ticinese, Brere and Porta Nuova.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II and Quadrilatero d’Oro

Milan is known for its fashion and you get why when you visit the Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II. You’ll find all the famous fashion brands in this impressive shopping centre. You should also pay a visit if you’re not a fan of fashion or shopping: the building’s architecture is truly stunning and the building is characterised by its beautiful rooftop made of glass. You can also do a tour of the building, which won't necessitate you to walk into all the stores.

If you do want to shop in Milan, then you should also pay a visit to the shopping street Quadrilatero d’Oro. You cannot only find famous brands here, but also well-known franchises like H&M and local boutiques. This is the most expensive street in the city, but you can, luckily, find less expensive stores here, as well. You should definitely visit this street when you find yourself in the famous city of fashion!

Another popular and impressive park in Milan is the Biblioteca degli Alberi. You can wander through the botanic garden and the apartment complexes which are entirely covered by plants.
