The top scorers and most matches of Real Madrid in the Champions League

The unprecedented success of Real Madrid was partly achieved by the many top football players who played for the club. The goal-scorers weren’t the only important players; the solid, reliant players in the rearguard, as well.

The top scorers of Real Madrid in the Champions League
Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer of Real Madrid in the Champions League; he scored a total of 105 goals. The Portuguese even holds the record of having scored the most goals ever in the Champions League: a total of 140. Karim Benzema succeeds Ronaldo with 74 Champions League goals in Real Madrid's jersey. Raúl is on a third place with 66 goals, followed by Di Stéfano with 49 goals, Puskás with 34 goals, and Gento with 32 goals. So, it’s clear that the new generation of footballers is a lot more confident than former forwards.

Most matches of Real Madrid in the Champions League
The Spanish goalkeeper Casillas is the record-holder of most matches played for 'Royal Madrid' in the Champions League: 152 matches. Raul has played 132 matches, Sergio Ramos 129 matches, Roberto Carlos 109 matches and Modric 102. The question remains whether Benzema and Modric will add more matches to the ones they played, since they're starting to get older.

This is how Real Madrid performed the last five years in the Champions League

Real Madrid won the Champions League twice in the last five seasons. The finals against Liverpool in 2018 was one of the most bizarre finales ever played in the Champions League.

Real Madrid in the Champions League 2021/2022

After winning the Spanish competition, Ancelotti’s club won the Champions League. The qualifying rounds weren't very exciting, but the play-off round was very tough. Real played against PSG in the round of 16. They lost by 0-1 in Paris and PSG already scored their first goal after 40 minutes in Santiago Bernabéu. It seemed the game was already decided but that wasn’t the case. Karim Benzema scored a solid hattrick during the second half and brought Madrid to the quarter-finals. Chelsea would be their opponent. Real Madrid won once again. Many goals were scored in the semi-finals against Manchester City. Real won the home game by 3-1 and they lost the away game by 4-3. Ballon d’or winner, Karim Benzema, was the goal-scorer in both matches. Real Madrid defeated Liverpool in a less exhilarating match by 1-0 and they won their 14th title.

Real Madrid in the Champions League 2020/21

People weren't sure about what to expect of Real Madrid's performances before the start of season 2020/21. Partly because solid footballers like Modric and Kroos started to age. That age is just a number appeared from the results. The qualifying round with Sjachtar, Inter and Mönchengladbach was an easy win for Real. Atalanta got defeated in the round of 16 and Real defeated Liverpool during the quarter-finals. Chelsea appeared to be too strong in the semi-finals. The match ended 1-1 in Madrid and 2-0 in London.

Real Madrid in the Champions League 2019/20

It has taken Real Madrid a while to get used to the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo departed to Juventus in 2018. They won from Club Brugge and Galatasaray in the qualifying round, but PSG won from Madrid by 3-0 and they played a draw the next game. It went wrong in the round of 16 against Man City. Both matches ended in Madrid losing by 2-1. Benzema and Isco scored Madrid’s goals during the matches.

Real Madrid in the Champions League 2018/19

Ajax teased Real Madrid the most during this Champions League year. Royal Madrid first thought they'd be fine in the round of 16. They won in Amsterdam by 2-1, but it went drastically wrong for Real Madrid in Santiago Bernabéu; Ajax won by 1-4. The defeat was completed during injury time when Nacho picked up a red card. The result? A crisis in Madrid and celebrations in Amsterdam.

Real Madrid in the Champions League 2017/18

Real won the group stage, despite of a tough draw. APOEL Nicosia was an easy win, but Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund were tough opponents. Real Madrid ended up second in the group stage. They won from PSG twice in the round of 16. The quarter-finals against Juventus were pretty tough. They won the away game by 3-0 and they lost the home game by 1-3, so they narrowly escaped a kick-out from the competition. Los Blancos overwhelmed the strong Bayern in the semi-finals. Benzema scored a bunch of goals in both games. The finals against Liverpool is, until this day, one of the strangest matches in the history of the Champions League. Liverpool’s goalkeeper Karius made two awful blunders and Gareth Bale scored with what looked like a supernatural overhead kick.

Expectations Real Madrid in Champions League 2022/23

Real Madrid seems to be super strong, just like previous years. Old players and new talents play for the club, like Vinícius Júnior and Valverde. Trainer Carlo Ancelotti seems to have everything sorted out. This showed in the first four matches of the Champions League. Madrid won three and played one draw. They're also doing well in La Liga: they won the first El Clásico of the season by 3-1. In other words: Real Madrid is in shape and they seem to be on their way to winning their 15th Champions League title.
