Supercopa de España to be hosted in Saudi Arabia
Last Monday 11 November, the first ever Spanish Super Cup draw was held. The first ever, because the format and the venue of the small tournament have been changed. The Supercopa de España is an annual Spanish football competition that was originally founded in 1982.
Until 2017, the competition was played between the Copa del Rey champion and the La Liga champion, and was decided in one home match and one away match. If the champions of La Liga and the Copa del Rey were one and the same, the Copa del Rey runner-up would become the second contester. This was also the case in 2018, when FC Barcelona won both the Primera División and the Copa del Rey. Therefore, Copa del Rey runner-up Sevilla FC played the Supercopa de España against Barça. It was the first Supercopa to be played in a single match at a neutral venue. The match took place in Tangier, Morocco, and was won by FC Barcelona.
Last Monday, it was decided by the Royal Spanish Football Federation not only to change the venue of the tournament, but also the format. For the first time, the Spanish Super Cup will be played between four teams instead of two. Because of that, a draw was held.
The four teams that contest in the Spanish Super Cup are both the finalists from the Copa del Rey as well as the two highest ranked teams from the Primera Division. If a club ends first or second in La Liga but is also a Copa Del Rey finalist, the third highest ranked team from La Liga will also compete. As champion FC Barcelona is also this year’s Copa del Rey runner-up, Real Madrid gets a chance to compete in the mini tournament, too.
For the next three years, the Supercopa de España will be played in Saudi Arabia. The first semi-final round will be played on 8 January 2020 between Real Madrid and Valencia. One day later, FC Barcelona will face Atlético Madrid. The final will be held on 12 January.
