UEFA Super Cup 2019

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match between both winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, which takes place at the start of the new football season.

The first UEFA Super Cup was played in 1972, between the European Cup winner and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup-winner. It was founded by Dutch reporter Anton Witkamp. The first final, played between Ajax and Glasgow Rangers, was won by Ajax (6-3 on aggregate).

Before 1998, the UEFA Super Cup’s winner was decided in two matches. Nowadays, it’s just one match, played at a different location each year.

The two most successful clubs in the UEFA Super Cup are FC Barcelona and AC Milan, both having won the trophy 5 times. Real Madrid have won it 4 times, whereas Ajax, Liverpool and Atlético Madrid each have won the trophy 3 times.

The last 5 years, the UEFA Super Cup final was mostly played between Spanish clubs. Tonight, it’s going to be an English final all over again – as it was in the Europa League final between Chelsea and Arsenal (4-1) and the Champions League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool (0-2).

Liverpool and Chelsea are competing against each other at the Vodafone Park in Istanbul tonight at 21.00 hour (9.00 PM).

For the first time, the video assistant referee (VAR) system will be used in the UEFA Super Cup. Moreover, it will be the first time a woman is named by UEFA as referee of a UEFA men’s competition: Stéphanie Frappart will be the one in charge of the UEFA Super Cup.
