Estádio José Alvalade
Estádio José Alvalade: an amazing stadium with ambience
It is classified by UEFA as a five-star stadium. Because of this, the stadium hosts finals of major UEFA events and belongs to one of the best stadiums of Europe. The new Estádio José Alvalade opened in 2003. The predecessor of the stadium opened in 1956 but an agreement was made about the construction of a new stadium, which would host The Euro 2004. This is the seventh stadium Sporting Lisbon plays in and it’s been named after José Alvalade, the founder and first member of Sporting Lisbon.
Estádio José Alvalade’s history
The once colourful stadium – seats in different colours which would make it look like a mosaic artwork from afar and the bright yellow pillars that support the rooftop – changed slowly into the green stadium it is today. The field was of bad quality for years, which is why it had a four-star status. The board wanted to install synthetic turf, but the decision was abandoned because artificial lights were installed instead. The five-star stadium already hosted a Champions League finals. This will undoubtedly not stop here with such a good assessment by UEFA.
