The 2. Bundesliga is the second division of professional football in Germany. The division was founded in 1974, first consisting of two divisions with 20 clubs each, North and South. It was reduced to a single division in 1981, nowadays consisting of 18 clubs. Each club plays 34 matches during the season from August to may. Numbers 1 and 2 are promoted directly to the Bundesliga. Number 3 has to compete against number 16 from the Bundesliga. Numbers 17 and 18 are directly relegated from the 2. Bundesliga to the 3. Liga.
1.FC Nürnberg and SC Freiburg have won the 2. Bundesliga most with 4 titles each. Other clubs competing at the top-tier of the 2. Bundesliga are 1.FC Köln, Union Berlin, Heidenheim and Sankt Pauli. In 2018, Hamburger SV were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time ever since 1919. Now they will do everything they can to fight their way back into the Bundesliga.
In the 2018-019 season, the 2. Bundesliga’s overall average match attendance was 19,006 each match, making it the second most-watched secondary league in the world, ranked after the English Championship. Visiting a match in the 2. Bundesliga is definitely worth it.
