Bayer 04 Leverkusen, or just Bayer Leverkusen, Leverkusen or Bayer, is a German football club based in the homonymous Leverkusen. The club was established in 1904 and plays all of its home matches in the BayArena. This stadium – which was built in 1958 – has been the club’s home ground since its opening and has a capacity of 30.210. A hotel was built in the stadium in 1999, the Lidner Hotel BayArena, more generally known as Hotel Leverkusen. The Lidner Hotel BayArena was the first hotel in Germany, located at the side of a stadium. The restaurant, as well as some rooms, are provided with a view on the pitch, which is pretty spectacular.
Bayer Leverkusen has been active in the Bundesliga, which is the highest division in German football, non-stop since 1979. The club has competed in major European competitions lately, like the Champions League and the Europe League, but they have never won either competitions. The only big trophy Bayer Leverkusen has ever won was the UEFA Cup in 1988. The club has never won the Bundesliga either, but they did end up on a second place for five times. The club attained the title: ‘The Eternal Runners-Up’ because of this.
