Let’s dive into the history of Sunderland, before the start of your football trip to Sunderland. Sunderland AFC was erected in 1876 by a teacher at the Hendon Board School. The name of the club was first ‘The Sunderland & District Teachers Association Football Club’ and was founded for teachers to amuse themselves after work. The name changed after twenty days to Sunderland AFC, which means: Sunderland Association Football Club and it wasn’t necessary anymore to be a teacher in order to join. Sunderland, or ‘The Black Cats’, was one of the leading clubs when the Football League was founded, and they have won three First Division titles in the 1890s. The club turned professional in 1885. They were less lucky in the FA Cup where they won their first title in 1937 and the second in 1973.
They did, however, retrieve the reputation of England’s sixth most successful club of all time, since they have won the English League Championship six times.
The club’s success decreased when it was taken over by Campbell as manager. No titles were won in three seasons under Campbell’s watch. A Scotsman replaced Campbell and the club gained success again: the fourth League title was won, and they won the Sherriff of London Charity Shield. Sunderland has predominantly been playing at the highest level in English football since 2000. The team had a setback in 2017 and they relegated twice within two years’ time. Sunderland has always been famous in English football, despite of its many failures, because they have won the Championship 6 times. The club promoted back to the Championship in the season of 2021/2022 after four tragic years in League One. Now they’re back in the Championship again they will do anything in the world to show where they belong: in the Premier League!
