Volksparkstadion’s history

The current stadium of Hamburger SV was named after another club after its opening in 1925. The opening match was between FC Altona 93 and Hamburger SV. 25,000 supporters witnessed Hamburger SV lose from the big German club Altona. Even though Altona had its own stadium, this one retrieved the name Altonaerstadion. The name of the stadium confronted Hamburger SV with the fact that they had lost this game for 13 years. The stadium was renamed to Bahrenfelder Stadion after. The stadium was officially named the Volksparkstadion in 1953. Several years after World War II, the stadium got renovated and they predominantly used remnants of a bombarded district in Hamburg to reconstruct the stadium. Hamburger SV officially moved to Volksparkstadion in 1963 and from then on, the club has always belonged to one of Germany’s top clubs.
