Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, more commonly known as SSC Napoli, is an Italian football club from the city of Naples. The club was established in 1926 after a fusion between Naples Foot-ball & Cricket Club and Internazionale Napoli. The club’s biggest successes were achieved in the eighties. Partly because of star player Diego Maradona the club won the national championship twice, an UEFA Cup and a Coppa Italia. The club’s results plummeted in the succeeding years, and they even struggled with financial problems. SSC Napoli was declared bankrupt, and they didn’t receive a license for participating in the Serie B. With a change of name and less debts the club was allowed to play in the Serie C1 and they returned to the highest level of football in Italy in 2007.
SSC Napoli plays its home matches in the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona – which was the Stadio San Paolo first – and has conquered a spot in the top five of the rankings for several years now. They even ended up on a second place for three times. The club from Naples will try to draw attention to themselves again this season in the Serie A and they are definitely in the race for winning the title. Visiting the Stadio Diego Armando Maradone will already be an amazing experience during your football trip to SSC Napoli. The stadium has a capacity of around 60.000 and is the third biggest stadium of Italy, after the San Siro in Milan and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The stadium of SSC Napoli was built in 1948 and has been Napoli’s home ground ever since. It was first named the Stadio del Sole. This name changed in Stadio San Paolo 15 years later. Permission to rename the stadium in 2020 was asked by the Naples’ mayor when the club legend Diego Maradona died on the 25th of November in 2020. It’s officially forbidden to name a public building to a person that passed away less than ten years ago. However, an exception was made for the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona; the name was changed on the fourth of December in 2020. Do you want to know what the beautiful Stadio Diego Armando Maradona looks like from the inside? Discover it yourself during your football trip to SSC Napoli with Number 1 Football Travel.

This changed with the arrival of Diego Maradona in Napoli. The hierarchy between both clubs was disturbed and matches became fiercer and more intense.
