Southampton, also often referred to as The Saints, is an English football club founded in 1885. The club was founded as St Mary YMA, after which their stadium was named. The St Mary’s stadium has a capacity of over 32,000. The stadium was built in 2001; before that time they were based at The Dell. The Dell had a capacity of 24,000.
Southampton were relegated from the Premier League in 2005. After 7 years of absence they returned to the Premier League, and have played there ever since. They became a stable mid-table club for a few years, finishing 7th, 6th and 8th place, proving to be a stable contender in the Premier League. In 2018 however, the club finished 17th place, avoiding relegation on the last day of the season. Last season they finished 16th.
Despite being a real challenger in the Premier League and having a highly successful youth academy, Southampton have a continuous problem with great players leaving the club. The last few years players such as Morgan Schneiderlin, Luke Shaw, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mané have left the club from Southampton, making their results even more impressive. All in all, a football trip to Southampton is definitely worth it!
