Say goodbye to the legendary San Siro

The Stadio San Siro, also known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, will be torn down. A legendary stadium in Italy which is viewed as sacred by almost every football fan. The stadium is coming to its end after almost a century. It’s very sad news for the locals of Milan but they have to get used to the idea. Why does the most iconic stadium of Italy have to close its doors? And where will AC Milan and Internazionale play after its closing? You’ll find the answers in this blog.

‘Renovation is not an option’

It was already announced in 2019 that the two clubs from Milan wished to build a new stadium next to San Siro. They received the news that the football temple needed to host the Olympic Winter games in 2026. This calmed the fans down until the club officially declared that the end of Stadio Giuseppe Meazza was near. The stadium did no longer meet the requirements it was supposed to meet nowadays and renovating the stadium is simply not feasible, according to chairman Paolo Scaroni. Supporters finally joined forces and fiercely rebel against the demolition of their iconic stadium.

Why does the iconic stadium need to go?

The fact that it’s simply not feasible to renovate the stadium is not the only reason for the football temple to hit the ground. The chairman of Inter Milan claims that the city contains too little green and too much cement. This is the most important reason for this great block of cement to disappear from the city. Fans are inconsolable and are doing all they can to stop the demolition from happening. They formed groups hoping that San Siro will stay and get renovated. They constantly receive the same answer from the board, which is that this is not an option, because the stadium cannot continue to welcome over 50,000 people every day while constructions are carried out. For these reasons, the board has sorrowfully decided to build a new, sustainable stadium.

What to expect from La Cattedrale

The new stadium is called ‘La Cattedrale’ now. This can still change when the naming rights are taken over by an extern sponsor, but for now it’s settled on La Cattedrale (The Cathedral). The location of the new stadium hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it will most likely be build next to the current stadium. They are planning on building a park of around 50,000 square meters next to the new stadium, so La Cattedrale will be surrounded by a sea of green. The capacity of the new stadium will be around 60,000, which is almost 20,000 less than the current San Siro. The construction of the stadium will create jobs for more than 3,500 people and the new area will become the centre of both sporting events and entertainment.

Take your chance while you still can!

Would you like to admire the gigantic football temple with your own eyes one more time? The stadium will probably meet the wrecking ball in 2027. This means that you’ve still got four years to visit the most iconic stadium of Italy. Book your football trip to AC Milan or Internazionale today so you can still experience the fantastic ambience at San Siro! Be quick, because it is expected that football fans from all over Europe will travel to Milan to visit a game of one of the two Milan clubs at the epic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
