Top transfers 2020/21

Last updated: 24-09-2020

In a few weeks’ time, a great deal has happened within the 2020 football transfer window – including many speculations. Who has officially been signed at the start of the new 2020/21 season? Read everything about the latest transfers here.

Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva

At the beginning of September, after weeks of speculations, Kai Havertz took off to England. Chelsea reportedly paid about 80 million for Bayer Leverkusen's central midfielder. Havertz signed a 5-year contract. He was certainly not the first player who was signed by Chelsea. Chelsea spent 150 million euros this summer, bringing in Hakim Ziyech (Ajax), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City) and the transfer-free defenders Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain) and Malang Sarr (Nice). Thiago Silva has never played Premier League football before. PSG let the Brazilian leave to Chelsea after eight years. He will be joining Frank Lampard's team for at least one year.

Gareth Bale

After years of playing (and also struggling) at Real Madrid, in which his performance fluctuated and his playing minutes kept decreasing, Gareth Bale has finally been released: he was allowed to leave Real Madrid. Bale returns to Tottenham Hotspur on loan, where he previously played from 2007 to 2013. Real Madrid paid a hundred million euros for the Welsh footballer, a record amount at the time.

James Rodríguez

James Rodríguez also left Los Blancos at the beginning of this month. Everton took him over for approximately 23 million euros. The 29-year-old offensive midfielder has never played in the Premier League before.

Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek did not play during the friendly match of Ajax against Eintracht Frankfurt. Many had seen it coming for months and it was confirmed not much later: Donny van de Beek would be leaving Ajax. At the beginning of September, the 23-year-old midfielder left his youth club and travelled to Manchester United, where he made his debut last weekend and scored within 20 minutes. Unfortunately, United lost 1-3 against Crystal Palace; a bad start at Old Trafford.

Barcelona players leaving

Ivan Rakitiç

Midfielder Ivan Rakitiç was the first player to leave FC Barcelona for Sevilla FC. He has played for Barcelona for almost six years, from 2014 to 2020. Before that, the Croat already played for Sevilla, from 2011 to 2014 to be precise. Sevilla will take over the midfielder for 1.5 million euros. A few days after the transfer was announced, the Croat told the media that he has decided to end his international career.

Arturo Vidál

Internazionale has taken over Arturo Vidál from FC Barcelona. After Ivan Rakitiç had left Barcelona earlier, Ronald Koeman is letting another midfielder go. The Chilean footballer has played for Barcelona for more than two years, but he is now returning to the Serie A, where he already played for record holder Juventus from 2011 to 2015. At the beginning of the summer, Internazionale also added Achraf Hakimi to the selection.

Nélson Semedo

Nélson Semedo will also be leaving Barcelona. Wolverhampton Wanderers will pay as much as 40 million euros for the right-back from Portugal, who will soon make his Premier League debut. After having played for various Portuguese clubs, Semedo made his first transfer abroad in 2017, where he played for Barcelona for three years.

Rumour has it that Semedo will be replaced by Sergiño Dest. Ronald Koeman isn’t finished yet. He also wants to buy Memphis Depay from Olympique Lyon, but to complete this transfer, more player will have to leave Barcelona...

Luis Suárez

For months, there have been many speculations about the future club of Luis Suárez, after the announcement of Ronald Koeman that there was no future left for him at Barcelona. Rumours about his transfer changed from Ajax into Juventus, but in the end it was Atlético Madrid who drew the long straw. They paid 6 million euros for El Pistolero.

Suárez has played for Barcelona since 2014. Before that, he played for Ajax (2007-2011) and Liverpool (2011-2014).

Transfer deadlines

For the time being, speculation will continue. In the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and the Scottish Premiership, the transfer market will remain open until 5 October. The Eredivisie transfer window will be open until 6 October; the Primeira Liga doesn't close until 16 October.
