Visit the city of champion Bayern Munich

If you are going to visit a football match of Bayern Munich, you’ll visit the beautiful city of Munich. Munich is the second biggest city of Germany which means that there are plenty of sights to visit. Football is in the air in Munich and you will definitely notice this during your visit! The city doesn’t only revolve around football; the whole of Germany drinks a lot of beer and eats German delicacies like bradwurst and hamburgers.

Munich, the football city

Bayern Munich is the best football club in the German Bundesliga. They keep on winning the cup, and that's exactly why football trips to Bayern Munich are extremely popular amongst Germans and tourists. You’ll take place in the impressive Allianz Arena with a beer in your hand and you’ll enjoy an amazing football match of Bayern Munich. But… what else is there to do in the city besides watching football, drinking beer and eating Weißwurst? Number 1 Football Travel has made an overview of the must-sees in Munich. Continue reading and discover how to experience the best weekend away!

Marienplatz

The Marienplatz is in the heart of Munich and you can enjoy the stunning architecture the square is surrounded with. The square is in the old part of the city where you can find old and new buildings. The New and Old Town Hall are examples of what can be found at the square, but the square is also surrounded with historical churches and shopping streets on both sides. Do you by any chance need a scarf or football shirt of Bayern Munich? Or do you just want a nice jumper to take home with you? Then you’re at the right place.

Neues and Altes Rathaus

As mentioned above, the New and Old Town Hall can be found at the Marienplatz and the town halls are certainly worth a visit. The New Town Hall is hard to miss, because the exuberantly decorated façade attracts all of your attention. The Town Hall plays 43 melodies of bells daily. The Old Town Hall is much smaller and less conspicuous, but certainly not less beautiful. The Old Town Hall changed into a historical toy museum after the New Town Hall opened. You'll find all kinds of historical toys in the museum and the musuem is opened daily from 10 A.M. until 5.30 P.M.

Englischer Garten

Would you like to escape the chaos of the city for a bit and do you want to take a breath? Then you should visit the Englischer Garten. It's the biggest city park of Europe and it’s even bigger than New York’s Central Park! The park was initially intended for the military, but it was opened for public use pretty quickly. It’s usually quite busy at the park, probably due to the fact that the park contains a couple of sights you can visit. The most important ones are the Japanese Tea Room, the Chinese Tower and the Monopteros Temple.

Hofbräuhaus

Beer is obviously very important to Munich. The Hofbräuhaus is a beer hall in Munich where you’ll find out how beer is made, and you can taste your own brewed beer after the tour. You should visit the world-famous beer hall Hofbräuhaus, even if you don’t like beer. The beer hall has been standing in Munich for four centuries and some parts even survived the Second World War. You can visit the beer hall all year round and the atmosphere is amazing at Hofbräuhaus.

Beer gardens

Now that we’re on the subject of beer; Munich has no fewer that 180 beer gardens. They are all packed when the sun is out. Take a seat at one of the long wooden tables and order a pint of beer; that’s all you have to do. The best beer garden is located at Viktualienmarkt, according to many, because this is the only beer garden where you can order all six local beers. Are you at Viktualienmarkt and are you getting hungry while drinking beer? That’s no problem, because the Viktualienmarkt is known for its great food, and you can order Bavarian dishes here. So, this is the best place to indulge in Munich's culture!

Münich Residenz

The Münich Residenz is the former royal palace of Munich. The palace is surrounded by 10 courtyards and contains 130 chambers. Generations of royal blood has lived here over the ages. You can spend days wandering through the palace, and not only because of the impressive décor and the stunning architecture, but also because of the art exhibitions. It's highly recommended to visit the palace when you’re in Munich!

Olympiapark

Many Olympic stadiums are forgotten or get transformed into football stadiums after the Olympics, but in Munich, they have done something special with the Olympic stadium. The Olympiapark is one of the most important sights in Munich and there’s a reason for this. The Olympiapark is not only a beautiful sight to see, but there’s a lot you can do in the park, too. You can, for example, enjoy the outdoor swimming pool. Would you like to see the city from above? Then you should take the elevator of the Fernsehturm, and you'll be provided with a beautiful view over the city. The view reaches as far as the Alps on clear days, so you might be lucky and get a glimpse of the mountains.

Annual events in Munich - Oktoberfest

A bunch of events take place in Munich annually. The film festival of Munich is the second most important film festival of Germany and it always takes place in June. Not only German premieres are broadcasted here, but international ones, as well. Young talents can make their debut at the festival, because the film festival puts the emphasis on up-and-coming talents.

The Oktoberfest might sound a bit more familiar to you. The famous Oktoberfest is celebrated in the whole of Germany and Munich will do everything in their power to make a success of this beer festival. Tourists all around the world visit Germany especially to celebrate Oktoberfest. It might even already be on your bucketlist to go to the Oktoberfest one day.

After the Oktoberfest, the city instantly prepares itself for the holiday season. Germany is known for its Christmas markets that every big city organises annually. Munich is one of these cities that organises a Christmas market every year and you can walk around at the market weeks before Christmas. You should absolutely visit the Christmas market when you’re visiting Munich in November or December.

Party in Munich

After Bayern Munich’s victory you probably want to drink a cold German beer somewhere in the city. There are around 180 beer gardens in Munich, and visiting a beer garden before Bayern's game is the best thing to do to get in the mood, isn't it? Unfortunately, beer gardens usually close a little earlier than other cafés or bars, so you won't be able to visit a beer garden after the match. That’s why we have listed three other options to visit after the match.
